Tutorial 10 provides a great introduction to serial communications. The tutorial shows how to implement an universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) IP Core to control a 4-bit counter through a RS-232 port. The tutorial uses Xilinx ISE 10.1 and the Spartan-3E starter board.
